"I think, fundamentally, you and I, we want the same things. We want the same people in custody, but... that's not my priority. My priority is my family. You help me get 'em back, I'll give you what you want."
A fundamental part and driving force behind many of David's decisions throughout the series is firstly, his love for his family and secondly, his strong moral compass and unwavering will to do the right thing. As a husband and a father, David cares about his family dearly, to the point where he would fake his death twice and live in hiding for an entire year isolated from any form of human contact just to keep them safe. Initially, David is portrayed to be analytical and observant, being the first one outside of Frank's very small circle of friends to uncover the fact that he is still very much alive. David has the upper hand on gathering information and using it to his advantage, which he never hesitates to exploit in order to get what he wants. He is very secure in everything he does; very rarely does David seem to second guess his decisions, even if they are difficult ones, believing that what he is doing and what he chooses to do is the right thing. This doesn't mean that he is free from the consequences of his actions, however, as he does express remorse and regret for faking his death and cutting himself off from his family for a year; he insists that he did it to protect them, even at the cost of hurting them.
For all that he is analytical and observant, David is also driven by emotion -- he's desperate when the people he cares about are threatened, which sometimes leads him to making decisions on the fly that may not always be the best. The guilt from those decisions come two fold: although David may be secure in everything he does, he tends to overthink them later and second guess himself despite it being past the point where he can do anything about it. He lacks the self-esteem to live with his choices and let go of regret, no matter how much he justified making those decisions at the time. Going into hiding after the first time he faked his death is one that constantly plagues him: he monitors his family with hidden cameras he'd placed in his home, watching his children grow up through his computer screens and never tries to make contact with them throughout the year. After he teams up with Frank, he has the other man visit his home numerous times, whether it's to check up on his children or to help ease Sarah's loneliness in the wake of his "death". Each time, David watches Frank become closer to his children and his wife despite Frank's own discomfort, almost living through Frank vicariously in each of his interactions. It's clear that David doesn't see himself as a good father or husband, that he feels his family is better off without him, and that he regrets hurting them as much as he did even if it was to protect them.
Still, it doesn't make him love them any less. Beneath his insecurity and guilt, David is extremely loyal to the people he cares about and can't handle seeing them in pain. Watching his wife and son get kidnapped by Rawlins' agents is ultimately what brings him out of hiding, despite knowing that it's part of their plan to lure Frank. The year he spent in isolation, all the precautions he'd taken to disappear and the painstaking effort he takes in maintaining them -- he'd be willing to throw all that away and put himself in danger again just to keep his family safe. This even extends to Frank, whom he had a strictly business partnership with in the beginning of the series that eventually evolved into him caring about Frank like he would a brother. David understands the significance of everything Frank has done for him and his family and he doesn't take it lightly, believing wholeheartedly that Frank deserves a second chance and another shot at being happy despite everything he's been through. If it means welcoming Frank into his family, he'd gladly do so, but he leaves that choice up to Frank. David is surprisingly sensitive in how he approaches people and their limits when he needs to; though he may not always succeed, his intentions are generally good until he's provoked.
